  Part of the Department for Work and Pensions, the Age Positive team is responsible for strategy and policies to support people making decisions about working and retirement. The Age Positive campaign promotes the benefits of employing a mixed-age workforce. Their website offers good practice guides, advice on tackling ageism, and provides information for employers on the Age Regulations.   The Department for Business Enterprise and Regulatory Reform (BERR), formerly known as the Department of Trade and Industry (DTI), is the government department responsible for employment policy and legislation.  The DTI provided general notes on the Age Regulations and information for employers on how the Regulations apply to retirement procedures and pension schemes. These are now on the BERR website.

  The Employers Forum on Age (EFA) is an independent network of more than 230 leading employers who recognise the value of a mixed-age workforce. The EFA campaigns for practical change in employment issues and an end to age discrimination. The EFA' s website provides information on the Age Regulations, and how to prepare for the legislation. The EFA has produced a range of services for its members. These include a set of 'Age Aware' materials (designed to aid the employer inform employees about age discrimination legislation) and several publications including The Insider Guide to Age Laws which provides advice on key aspects of policy and practice.   Founded in 2000, the Equality Challenge Unit promotes equality and diversity in higher education. It has issued general guidance notes and an extensive FAQ section to assist those providing student-related services. With UCEA (University and Colleges Employers Association) ECU has convened a joint working group to support the sector in implementing the Age Regulations.   The Equality Commission works towards eliminating discrimination and promoting equality of opportunity in Northern Ireland. The recently launched Equality and Human Rights Commission (EHRC) champions equality and human rights for all, working to eliminate discrimination, reduce inequality, protect human rights and to build good relations, ensuring that everyone has a fair chance to participate in society.

The EHRC has taken over responsibility and the work of the Equal Opportunities Commission, the Commission for Race Equality and the Disability Rights Commission in respect of gender, race and disability.  But it has also taken on responsibility for the newer equality strands of age, religion or belief and sexual orientation.

At present their publications and support materials on ‘age discrimination’ are extremely limited.  However, they do have a ’Helpline’ which gives information and guidance on discrimination (including age discrimination) and human rights issues.  The Helpline can be contacted by telephone, text phone, letter, email or fax. 
Please note, the EHRC’s Helpline offices do not accept visitors and only provide a phone and correspondence service. They do not provide face to face advice.
